Every year the hump-back whales return to the coasts of Ecuador after traveling for more than 7000km coming from Antarctica. The marine area of the Machililla National Park is the important place for their reproduction.

You will have the possibility to watch this spectacular wonder of nature. Imagine these giants, who are 15 meters long and weigh about 45 tons, jump elegantly on the surface of the water….an imposing, beautiful sight.

The humpback whales prefer a surrounding temperature of 25C in their reproduction areas, as well as places near the shore, bays or reefs with  a depth of about 200 meters and long bancs from 3 to 5 km wide. There are whales that have been registered, who have visited the marine area of the Machalilla National Park for four following years. The same whales have also been spotted in Columbia and in Antarctica. The transit time to our coast is from June to October every year.

North East of the shores of Puerto Lopez, only a one and a half hour ship ride away, lies the Isla de la Plata (silver island).

On the way to the island (depending on the season) you will have the chance to observe the humpback whales (every year from June to October) as well as dolphins and pelicans.

The Isla de la Plata is a part of the protected area of the Machalilla National Park. Its climate and geographical characteristics are very similar to those of the Galapagos Islands.

There you will be able to discover the whole range of the native flora and fauna; such as the albatross, the pelicans, blue-footed-, red-footed- and masked boobies, frigate-birds and a never ending variety of birds worth photographing. In the island's waters you will find turtles, rays, seals and numerous multi colored fish that will invite you to dive in the warm water of the Ecuadorian Pacific.
